When mature salmon swim upstream to spawn in the fall, bears like this female journey down from the hills where they have been feeding on berries to gorge, fattening up for their long winter sleep. Kermode bears, referred to by the local First Nations people as spirit bears or ghost bears, really do look phantom-like when they emerge from the trees of the British Columbia's Great Bear Rainforest.
