Elephants form matriarchal groups that serve as the backbone of their life cycles and culture. Young calves are raised by the herd, roaming freely between the adults and seeking affection from the gentle caresses of their mothers, sisters, aunts, and grandmothers. Even after the males grow into tusk-wielding giants, they still carry the memories of their maternal bonds.
