The salmon run draws dozens of bears to the same stretch of river, driving a normally solitary species into close proximity with one another. Contact between bears can spark conflict, but life at the water's edge during the run in Katmai is largely peaceful. Most bears are focused strictly on the business of fishing. This male stayed close to the bank, patiently waiting for his window to strike. His movements were calm and deliberate, saving all his energy for the exact moment when a fish came within reach.
