On Baffin Island, summer brings the midnight sun, migratory birds, and a hardy carpet of vegetation across the rocky terrain. As the winter ice recedes, marine wildlife—from narwhals to bowhead whales—linger along the floe edge before moving to their summer territories. Among the arrivals are large pods of beluga whales, gliding through shallow bays and inlets with their newborn calves. They converge in Lancaster Sound, sometimes even by the thousands, and form one of the planet’s greatest wildlife spectacles. The ocean fills with a symphony of clicks, whistles, and high-pitched calls, earning these vocal, playful whales the name “sea canaries.”
