Petaka, as she is known, is a queen in every sense of the word: confident, commanding, and fiercely protective of her young. Unlike other monarchs, however, she wears scars in lieu of a crown and treads on silent paws with impossible grace. In her presence, I felt less like a photographer and more like a guest in her kingdom of granite peaks and grassy steppes—just fortunate enough to be invited in.
